Question - How do i clean 1950's and 60's plastic Gillette razor cases without damaging them?
Answer - If the case plastic is hazy or crazed (having minute cracks) there is really nothing that can be done. I clean my plastic cases with mild dishwashing liquid and water and then dey them with a very soft cotton cloth. Another thing to try is finding the exact same case, in better condition on ebay for a very reasonable price (maybe it has the wrong razor model in it),then buy that one and put your correct razor in that case).

Question - Hi Tom. Why is the shaveworld site not letting us register now. We are being denied access and nobody is replying to my emails. As one of the few who has uploaded items I hope you can help me with this.
Thank you.
Sheila shemac11
Answer - You had two different user names in the system. I fixed shemac11 to include the correct information. I deleted shemac, which included your privileges. Try it again using shemac11 as your user name. Contact me through "Webmaster", if it doesn't work. Tom

Question - My uncle passed away yesterday and we found two razors in his possessions. I know absolutely nothing about razors. I would like to find out more about them. How do I load the blades? Can I get more blades? How do you use them effectively? And do they have any value? One is a Curley Ideal Safety Razor with an ?A? stamped on it and three patent dates of March 5th 1889, June 12th 1900 and June 25th 1907 with a black handle and numbered 120825. The other is a Sextoblade Razor style A made by E. Weck, N.Y. the patent number is May 28th 07 with a yellowish handle and Durham Domino on it. Would you please help me with this?

Thank you,

Dominic Lumm

Answer - You seem to have described three razors: The Curley (previously described in this forum), the Sextoblade Style A, and the Durham Domino. Both the Sextoblade and the Durham razors were made from ca. 1908 to the 1950s. The Sextoblade was made by Edward Weck (E. Weck, New York, N.Y., later Edward Weck & Son, Brooklyn, N.Y.). Weck also made a similar Hair Shaper razor. An early patent was U.S. 929058, 27 July 1909. The Durham Domino was made by the Durham Safety Razor Co., New York, N.Y. (later Durham-Duplex Razor Co.) The first Durham patent was U.S. 854839, 28 May 1907.
The blades for the Curly and the Sextoblade slide out of the blade holder. The Durham Domino blade is released by sliding the part of the blade holder with the keyhole slots. The patent drawings may show how to do this and are available via this site (click on Patents and enter patent number).
All are collectible razors, for value estimate search the completed auctions on eBay, they are offered every to often. Of the three brands, the Durham-Duplex is the most common and the Curley is the least common.
I know of no suppliers of new blades for these razors, but some specialty blades may fit the Curley or the Sextoblade. Search for razor blades on the web.

Question - Hello -- I have a safety razor in its original box. The box is marked "Curley's Ideal Easy-Shaving Safey Razor". The blade on the razor is marked "Curley's Ideal Safety Razor". The razor is also marked "Patented Sept. 21st 1886, March 5th 1889, June 12th 1900". I'm just curious if you know anything about this safety razor. It is mint in the box. I could send you some photos of it if desired. Thanks for your help.
Answer - Your razor was made by J. Curley & Brother, 134 Nassau St. (c. 1880-1921), New York, N.Y. Their straight guard razors had a bar guard with diagonal ribs, a replaceable single-edge blade, and black or ivory-colored handle. U.S. patents: No. 349386, 21 Sep 1886, filed 15 Jun 1886, Terence F. Curley, Brooklyn, N.Y.; No. 398947, 5 Mar 1889 filed 6 Jul 1888, Terence F. Curley & Albert S. Granger.

The Curley was advertised as early as 1902 continuing until at least 1921. The "Aristos" model, c. 1902-1903, had a black or white handle and originally sold for $2.00 with one blade; blades were 75 cents each. It was first called Curley's Patent Reversible Safety Guard razor. The 1899 patent was issued to Terence F. Curley and Albert S. Granger; Terence was the "brother" in the firm). They also made pocket-knives.

Question - Can you give us any information on a lady schick Allegro Oriental Model 10.Are the Stones real Turquoise, is the Head Gold ?
Answer - Hi, your question is about a powered (electric) Schick shaver. I honestly know very little about these shavers. This class of products is really outside the scope of this forum. If I had to guess, the head is gold-plated, which is what we see with the mechanical razors, and the stones are not real Turquoise.

Question - I have a razor from D, J Faour Bros. that has a picture of Lafayette and Washington on the blade.the handle is celluloid. I'm trying to get information on the D. J Faour company and a date for the razor. I'm thinking it may be late 1800s for the razor, but we do have an ad for razors like this when Lafayette visited America in 1824-25. Can you help? thanks. LBK
Answer - It sounds like you have a straight (folding) razor, not a safety razor, which I know little about. According to Krumholz' 1987 book, and Goins' 1986 book, D. J. Faour & Bros. of New York City imported razors from Germany, some from Joseph Bey Karman. Unfortunately these references gave no dates.

Question - What is a stropper?
Answer - Any device to sharpen safety and straight razor blades (hones, strops, blade holders, mechanical devices, magnets, etc.). There are as many as 2000 different models/variations not counting leather strops. This site illustrates 1200+ of them.
