Question - i have a magnet it is safety razor u-magnet lowell,ma it is in looks like a brass case it is old
Answer - The U-Magnet razor was patented 25 July 1916 by Butler Ames, US Patent 1192367. According to Phil Krumholz, Ames had an engineering degree from MIT and was a member of the US Congress 1902-1912. You can find the patent on the Patents page of this site. It is relatively rare, so I can't hazard a guess on value. Info from Safety Razor Compendium.

Question - Hi, might you know anthing about the Besser (moustache/grooming) Razor? It's the same make as a Merkur moustache razor, even the same weight! I know that it was made in Japan and that's really it. When did they exist, where (Japan or Germany), when did they go under, did Merkur's razor come first? I know Besser means better or preferred in German... Any information on this company would be greatly appreciated!
Answer - I am guessing that the Besser is a (recent?) Japanese copy of the Merkur cosmetic or corn razor, made by Emir Hermes, Solingen-Mershied, Germany, circa 1920-1930s (now Merkur-Solingen).

Question - Hello Russ,
Might you know anything about a company that no longer exists called Besser? They made a moustache/grooming razor very similar to Merkur's; same shape, make and weight. Even the blades can be swapped out. All I have to go on is that they were made in Japan. Wondering when and where they existed and when they went under. Any info would be wonderful!
Thank you

Question - I was hoping to find an expert on early Packard Lektro-Shavers.
I have a model that seems to predate any I've seen due to its packaging and instructions.
I have read all the history I can find but the internet can only take one so far.
Any help would be wonderful.

What I have:
Box is black with no embossing, stamp or decal and no sign or remnant of a cigar style wrapper.
Inside is a folded cardboard divider with one area for the razor and a slightly larger one for the cord. Unique in that it would not allow any area for the leather pouch associated with the shaver.
Underneath the cardboard is a simple folded sheet (that matches the box size) with instructions, warranty and repair information.
Two illustrations (simple drawings) accompany the instructions and the "send to" address for repair is in Chicago on south Ashland Ave. at the point that is now the 290 expressway.
What I find odd is that the paper front page notice: "This razor should be used only on 110-volt 60 cycle alternating current"
Yet the shaver is stamped 110 volt ac or dc just above the cord installing port.
Cord patent numbers are from 1926 and 1933.
Shaver head patent number is from 1934.
Shaver cord port is stamped with the numbers 13287
I understand Mr. A.M. Andrews bought the rights to sell the shaver at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1934.
Could it be that model or an earlier one?
Thank you,
Rob

Question - I recently purchased a boxed safety razor the read "Rex King of Shavers" on the head. It was in a plain red box and had instructions for a Comet safety razor. The handles are a little different but the shape of the head is nearly identical. Is this a correct set? I have several other razors such as Boston, Barnum and Dandy that are identical but named differently. I thought maybe this may be the same case with this set.
Answer - All of these razors appear to have been made by H. (Hubert) C. Hart of Unionville, Conn. The "King of Cutters" trademark was used since c. 1880 and patent 919719, 27 Apr 1909, was filed 30 Sep 1908. Other names were Rex-King of Shavers, Comet, and Superman. Source: Safety Razor Compendium.

Question - hi I was going through my grandparents attic and cam across this razor. (England) Curley's patent reversible safety guard razor, patent sept 21st 1886 " march 5th 1889 No 1. this is imprinted on the blade itself, there is possibly a serial# 18625 on the handle, the actual holding handle for the hand is a off-white plastic, wondering if this has any value to it?
I was going to give this to a friend of mine but it is pretty unique, so I wanted to found out, ty cheryl
Answer - The Curley razor was manufactured and sold by J. (James) Curley & Brother, with addresses in New York City at 134 Nassau St. (c. 1880-1902), 6 or 8 Warren St., “opposite City Hall Park” (c. 1902-09), 318 Broadway (c. 1909),and 87 Duane (c. 1921).

The Curley was advertised as early as 1902 continuing until at least 1921. It was first called Curley's Patent Reversible Safety Guard razor. The 1899 patent was issued to Terence F. Curley and Albert S. Granger; Terence was the "brother" in the firm.

A Curley guard razor with box such as yours in good condition, might fetch $30 or so from knowledgeable collector. This one on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/curley-reversible-safety-guard-razor-/271247526092?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f279cc8cc) will probably not sell at the $150 that is being asked.

Question - In 1944 or 45 the Marlin razor blade division ran a campaign based on "foxhole" radios, a sort of crystal set using a Marlin blade as a detector, built by soldiers at Anzio. Marlin sent promotional materials to their dealers, including this picture of a store window display. I've been looking for a copy of this picture for many years (this one is scanned from Brophy's Marlin book) or any material at all from the campaign. If anyone reading this has run into anything like this (any related material or the picture) I would love to know. A scan of the picture would work if you have one in your collection that you don’t want to part with. I’ve been looking for material from this campaign for 8 years so if you see something a year from now, more than likely I’m still looking for it!

Also feel free to let me know if this should be in another forum...

Question - Can you show me the earliest Gillette razor blade and wrapper that was produced and sold around 1903/1904 and do you happen to know if it is the same blade that was shipped in the white paste board boxes and early tin with the double ring - before the leather cases? thanks so much
Answer - As answered by email the "looped" blade was probably the first sold to the public in large amounts. The first "notched" blade only records 59 being sold. The metal box is very rare. I sent you the numbers that will date the razor. You item was probably made between 1904-1906.

Question - Hi, I have a Collins Rotary safety razor circa 1915, sterling silver, in great condition with case. Can you give me an approximate value for it? Thanks, Glee Salveson richardpozar@gmail.com
Answer - Very high. I would hesitate to even guess. There are two types of Collins razors, a windup that spins the blade and a fixed blade version. Non-sterling windups have sold for $800 and up and fixed blades go for over $150 with case (one is now offered on eBay for $250). So a Sterling silver wind-up with case should fetch quite a bit more than $800.

Question - hi , my step dad as been given a wilkinson 7 day safety razor ... he believes it to be from the 1930's. Could you tell us if this item is worth anything . I have attached a photo.
Thanks ... Maddie

Answer - Depending on the type. there were many variations, normal set, 7 day set and the gold plated delux 7 day set, the Special Gorve V Coronation set and the three sets with the box covered in filigree work over lizard skin and snake skin. All Wilkinson razors fetch a good price, especially if they are the rarer sort.
Category - Safety Razors   Expert - PallMall
Question - Passed down in my family I have a Wilkinson Dry Shavor Razor, Patent #558703, other expersts patent to 1909-1910. It comes in the original outer box which is in very good condition except for some yellowing. The outer box says "factories...Acton & Colnbrook, London England. The razor is in a black plastic case. All of the original packaging is inside, including a small instruction manual that is a flip manual, you flip through the pages and each page shows the razor in a different phase of action, so that flipping through quickly shows the razor rocking back and forth. To my knowledge this is the only specimen complete with all the accompanying info. I am interested in it's worth and possible sale. I can, if worthwile send photo's. I have inquired as to Wilkinsons interest in this piece. Your thoughts would be appreciated. The razor is pristine, and the box's and literature on exceptional condition.
Answer - Your razor is the Wilkinson "Rocker' Razor which was introduced in 1947 and phased out in 1952.Over 100,000 were made and because there was a user problem in getting the razor to glid smoothly without grabbing the whiskers and pulling them out which caused pain, by 1950 it was in decline in popularity and a few years later deleted from the list.

There are I am afraid many examples in collections and on the market, a lot with their outer boxes (there were 4 different designs), printed instructions and 'Flicker' book instructions, which were later, that they command a modest price on ebay. There are variations in the markings on the head and handle but they are basically all the same. Having arranged the Wilkinson collection for them, I know they do have examples of this razor.

The original Patent was taken out in June 1944 by Frederick Knowles and improved and patented (594054) in march 1946 by Wilkinson sword Company and again patented in July 1947 (617294) by Wilkinson sword Company.

Question - I have reciently started collecting mugs and accessories.. If you could point me in the right direction of a guide book or web site it would be much appreciated. thanks.
Answer - The collection of shaving mugs is an excellent hobby. I personally hold about 265, including what I believe to be a total of 11 that were patented. I have a CD holding complete documentation of them all. Your enthusiasm is obvious. To help you out I would make a copy of this CD holding the shaving mugs. Please send me your mailing address. Question - I have a set of 7 razors in a box Curleys Easy Shaving Safety Razors--Each is numbered and labeled for each day of the week. Can you tell me anything about them. They are in very good condition
Answer - James Curley and his younger brother Terence founded the firm of J. Curley & Brother in New York about 1880 or possibly earlier. They imported razors from Sheffield England by 1874, and began manufacturing cutlery by 1903. Between 1886 and 1908 they patented various types of guard and safety razors that they sold as the Curley Ideal Safety Razor, the Peerless, and probably other names. A Curley seven-day set that you have is fairly rare. As to value, your best bet is to search eBay for Curley Safety Razors and see what a set like yours has sold for. I found one very nice set that sold for $200

For example, see: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Collectibles-/1/i.html?_nkw=apollo+safety+razor

Question - Hi, Found this at an estate sale of a 94 year old lady. I believe her husband was a barber many years ago and I purchased a number of straight razors as well. This has a G in a diamond but I don't think its a Gillette as I think they always used the full name. It is called a 'Handy' and came in a tiny leather pouch. The handles pull out each side and there is a flip up to get the razor out (the razor in it is a Gillette). Written above the center is Pat March-May 1921 and under the center Made in USA. I have bought and sold hundreds of Gillette razors but have never found one like this.
If you can help me on this I would be grateful.
Thanks Jan

Answer - As you discovered, the Handy pocket razor used Gillette-type blades. The G stood for Christian E. A. Gronbech of Woodhaven, N.Y. who patented it in 1921 (US patents 1370960 and 1376759). It was also sold as the B-P Shaver by Bigelow Parkin Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. The B-P came with a brown or black leather snap pouch, and it has been found with a nickel or gold finish. Depending on condition, a collector might offer $20 or so for a B-P or Handy razor with pouch. See the patent at

Question - Robert,
The last message regarding the Roberts Safety Razor wasn't clear about the condition. The razor is in great condition with no tarnish at all. The case is tarnisned.
Answer - Regarding the Roberts Safety razor. It is rare. The 1995 "Safety Razors: A Price Guide" lists the complete razor set with case, stropping handle (2 parts),and blade container at "$400 up." The tarnish on the should not reduce the value. The razor was made c.1920. A 1994 privately printed list of mail-auction prices lists an older Roberts razor marked "Patent applied for" with case, blade stropping too, blade container and "a few blades," the high bid was $560.
